Sensory Dining and the Tasting Table are expanding their horizons with new developments in beer-tasting software. The Tasting Table is currently available with the Wine Experience software, which offers tasting modules for still and sparkling wine. In this update, we are giving you a behind-the-scenes sneak peek at the creation of our newest tasting module!
While developing the Tasting Table, a multitouch table designed to fit into many tasting environments, such as tasting rooms, wine bars, restaurants, and breweries, it was the goal to create a table that would support many sensory dining experiences.
The beer-tasting module will be our first foray into a different beverage than wine. To develop the new software module, we went back to the drawing board and started with research on the distinct qualities of beer.
After reading multiple books on beer tasting and consulting various sources on the internet, we found that beers are made up of these main elements: aroma and flavor, color, carbonation, body, and mouthfeel. The two primary ingredients that impart flavor in a beer are the malt and the hops.
We are currently in the process of modifying our tasting wheel to accommodate beer tastings. We are also determining which other qualities to include in our tasting profile that will speak to most beer drinkers.
Currently, we are testing our prototype wheel and some other flavor dimensions by tasting many local beers in a wide variety of styles. From lagers with very light flavor profiles to red and brown ales, various types of IPAs, porters, and stouts.
The Steelbender team, an Albuquerque-based brewery, came to our studio for our second prototype tasting. We’re grateful for the expertise they shared with us!
